How Messenger Is Used
Messenger is a popular alternative to SMS texting. People generally use it to send text chats, share photos/videos and even make voice or video calls. Regular chats and voice/video chats can be started between individuals or in groups.
How To Download Facebook App
Messenger can be used:
- via Facebook.com by selecting the Messenger icon in the top menu
- via Messenger.com
- on an iOS device with the official iOS Messenger app installed
- on an Android device with the official Android Messenger app installed
- on a Windows computer with the official Windows 10 Messenger app
A Mac app for Messenger is reportedly coming later in 2019.
Messenger's Main Features
There are lots of features packed into Messenger. The main ones that are worth knowing about include:
Recent Chats
This is the list of recent conversations you've had with individuals and groups, shown on the main speech bubble tab in the bottom menu. New, unread messages are marked by a blue dot. Tap on any one of them to open it. Then you can either send a message back or even start voice or video chat.
Message Composer

This is marked by the pencil and paper icon in the top right of the mobile app. It also appears above your recent chats on Messenger.com and as a New Message label in the Messenger dropdown menu on Facebook.com.
Select this to start a new chat with an individual friend or a group. Just select the people you want to chat with from the list or start typing their name in the search bar to find them quickly.
How To Save Messenger Messages
Message Requests
If someone you're not connected to on Facebook sends a message, you'll receive it as a message request — not as a main chat message. You can either accept a message request or ignore it to prevent future unwanted messages.
Message requests can be accessed from the People tab on the app (by tapping the speech bubble icon), from selecting the gear icon in the top left of Messenger.com or by selecting Message Requests at the top of the Messenger dropdown menu on Facebook.com.
Messenger Settings
Your Messenger settings allow you to set your notifications, active status, username and preferences for features like contacts, stories and more. Settings can be accessed and customized by tapping your profile picture in the top left on the app (or the gear icon > Settings on Messenger.com).
Stories (On the App)
If you're using the Messenger app on a mobile device, you can tap the Your Story button or the Camera icon on the Chats tab to take a photo or video and then post it as a story. You can also see stories from friends in the horizontal menu, above your recent chats.
Discover (On the App)
This tab can be accessed by tapping the compass icon in the bottom menu on the app. Find new businesses to connect with (and chat with directly), games to play with friends, news outlets to receive highlights and so much more.
Chatting With Friends on Messenger
Messenger is most used via the mobile apps, so we'll focus on the mobile-specific features here. There are many of the same features on Messenger.com and Facebook.com, but they might look different or be accessed differently.
Messenger's chat tabs are set up much like any other texting or messaging app — using gray and blue speech bubbles to help you distinguish between your messages.
At the bottom of any chat where the text field is, you'll see several different buttons:
- Four dots: Share things like your location, games, and reminders — or share something from a third-party service like Spotify or Pinterest.
- Camera: Record a video or snap a photo to send (and simultaneously post as a story if you want).
- Image: Upload an image from your device.
- Microphone: Use your device's microphone to record and send a voice clip.
- Smiley face: Send emojis.
- Thumbs up: Send a quick thumbs up emoji immediately.

This can also be done via Messenger.com (if you have a webcam set up) by looking for the same icons in the top right.
You can send and receive payments through Messenger, but you'll need to have a Facebook account associated with your Messenger account in order to do it.
Some additional useful small features included in Messenger is its typing indicator to see when the person is writing something, delivered receipts, read receipts, and timestamp for when the chat was sent — with another for when the most recent one was read.
Chats and activity are synced right across your Messenger account so no matter where you access Messenger from, it will always be updated with your latest chats, activities and setting configurations.
Use of Messenger requires a Wi-Fi connection or mobile data plan. If you're ever in a location with a bad signal or simply want to save on data, you might want to consider downloading and installing Messenger Lite, which is a stripped down version of the standard Messenger app that includes only the main features. It's designed to work faster in areas with bad connections and on older devices with limited processing power.
Adding People to Messenger
If you have a Facebook account already associated with Messenger, then your current friends are automatically added as contacts. There are, however, several other ways to connect with people to Messenger via the mobile app, which include:
- adding them via their username
- syncing your device's contact list to Messenger to find one or multiple existing contacts who are also on Messenger
- adding them directly from their phone number that's associated with their Messenger account
- scanning their Messenger user code directly from an image or their device
Find out how to add anyone to Facebook by following these steps that walk you through each method listed above.
Switch Accounts or Logout of Messenger
If you maintain multiple Facebook and/or Messenger accounts, being able to switch between them can make things a lot easier. There isn't an option to do this on Messenger.com (and you can switch Facebook accounts via Facebook.com easily when using it from Facebook) but you can do it from the iOS or Android app.
All you need to do is tap your profile picture in the top left, scroll down to Account & Support and tap Switch Account. If you haven't added another account yet, tap + Add Account and follow the instructions given.
You can also create a brand new one without an existing Facebook account by tapping the Create New Account button at the bottom.
